Consistency. It’s a theme that keeps recurring in my life. Do I want to keep a thriving relationship with Christ? Long to attain health and fitness goals? Desire closeness in a friendship? The thing that I need in my life to reach all of these things is consistency. If I consistently take “incremental, implementable, imperfect action,” as Jordan Lee Dooley talks about in her book Own Your Everyday, I can accomplish these and more.
Consistency in and of itself is not the only step needed to obtain success. Rather, consistency paired with positive action, whether small or dramatic, is the key to accomplishing dreams. Once a dream has been dreamt, clarity wrought on its structure, and action steps identified, consistency is the key.
Usually small, repeatable actions are the best way to achieve a goal. In his book The Compound Effect, Darren Hardy discusses how doing the same small action over and over again is massively effective over time. The longer that you consistently perform the action, the greater the impact and effectiveness of the action. If you haven’t read The Compound Effect, I highly recommend it!
“Consistency is the key to achieving and maintaining momentum.”
– Darren Hardy, The Compound Effect
Many conversations I’ve had with friends and family lately have centered on the idea of consistency. It is the reason why some of us cannot progress towards our goals while others of us are able to stay on top of their priorities.
In a recent quiet time, I read Proverbs 13:11 which says, “Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.” It speaks to me of the consistency that I have been pondering. When something is spoken in scripture, the significance is vastly important. But I find that it is especially impactful when God’s word and “worldly wisdom” are aligning in the messages I receive at the same time in my life. Whenever a message of significance is being delivered, it will not hurt to listen.
How do you fare in the area of consistency? Is it something that you are able to harness in your life? Or is it something that you are still grasping for? Let me know in the comments below!
